Jake Sullivan stressed that China and other countries could be notified of new sanctions in the coming weeks.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Friday that the United States will impose new sanctions on China and other countries in the coming weeks over their cooperation with Russia.

Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, Sullivan said the White House has demonstrated over time that it is preparing “to tighten the screws and impose sanctions on specific entities and individuals, including in China, but also in other countries, and that this pattern will continue into the future.”

In this sense, he indicated that other sanctions might be announced depending on how the scenario develops in the coming weeks.

On February 23, the second anniversary of the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the US authorities announced new sanctions against more than 500 Russian targets, including officials, banks and companies. These sanctions were intended to harm the central financial capacity of the Eurasian country.

According to Washington, Russian officials have access to properties in the US and some Western countries, travel there and do business there, while punishing those who negotiate with these people.

In turn, companies are denied access to the U.S. market or are prevented from opening accounts in that country. The sanctions also aim to limit Russian exports and energy production, restrict revenues from mining and metals, and limit Russian defense capabilities.

The US government also targeted 26 technology and spare parts companies and citizens of third countries, including China, Serbia, the United Arab Emirates and Germany, that have business interests with Russian companies.

However, these sanctions announced in February are a continuation of those announced by the US and the European Union after the start of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, when the administration of US President Joe Biden announced sanctions to isolate Russia from the international financial system.

Although the sanctions initially targeted Russian entities and individuals closely associated with Vladimir Putin, Washington quickly imposed sanctions on ten companies and eight individuals from Belarus in retaliation against the country for its support for Russia.
