New Delhi: With low-intensity rains occasionally since the last few days,  the National Capital Region (NCR) including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad is currently struggling with the heat caused by humidity. Notably as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), similar predictions have been made for today with mostly cloudy skies and a forecast of light rain. Furthermore, as per the Weather Department’s weekly update for the region, the maximum temperature in NCR today is expected to peak at around 36 degrees Celsius, meanwhile the lower end is not expected to dip below 29 degrees Celsius.

It is also noteworthy that the residents of Delhi-NCR continued to endure sweltering humidity on Friday, as the maximum temperature reached 36.2 degrees Celsius. Although some parts of the national capital experienced light spells of showers, the respite was minimal.

Lower than normal rainfall in Delhi

IMD data reveals that Delhi has seen significantly below-average rainfall, resulting in persistent heat and humidity. The weather over the next ten days is expected to remain largely unchanged. Despite cloud cover, substantial rainfall is unlikely. Winds will also be calm, potentially exacerbating the heat. Rainfall measurements showed that, except for Aya Nagar, all weather stations in Delhi recorded between 0.1 mm to 0.4 mm of rain during the afternoon. Aya Nagar saw 2.9 mm of rain between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM.

Rainfall distribution in different parts

As per the weather department’s data, West Delhi experienced the least rainfall, followed by North Delhi with a 64 per cent deficit (70 mm against 193.1 mm). East Delhi saw a 34 per cent deficit, South Delhi 32 percent, Southwest Delhi 27 per cent, and Central Delhi 22 per cent. Conversely, Northwest Delhi recorded 57 per cent more rain than usual, making it the wettest area in the capital. New Delhi and North Delhi also saw excess rainfall, at 35 per cent and 46 per cent respectively.

Monsoon Rains Elude Delhi-NCR

The onset of the monsoon season saw the least rainfall in West Delhi, with a 99 per cent deficit from June 1 to July 17. IMD data indicates that West Delhi’s normal rainfall should be 185.2 mm by July 17, but only 1.5 mm was recorded. Similarly in Gautam Buddha Nagar, rainfall was 88 per cent below average, with only 16.5 mm recorded against the expected 140.1 mm. Similar deficits were observed in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, including Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.
