Nikunj takes first place in 200m backstroke

The two-day 35th sub junior and 47th junior Punjab swimming championships 2024 for boys and girls kicked off on Saturday morning. The tournament is being organised by the district swimming association at the Punjab Agricultural University swimming pool.

A total of 204 boys and 135 girls are participating in this championship. Apurva Sharma from Mohali set the first new record in 100m butterfly (Girls-II) with a time of 1 min 14.12 sec., breaking her own record by 0.69 sec. of 2023.

In 200m Backstroke (Boys-II) Nikunj Behal secured the first position beating Trinabh Sharma. In 800m Freestyle (Boys-I) Jujhar Singh Gill secured the first position and in 200m Individual Medley (Girls-I) Arshpreet Kaur defeated Vanshika and Ekambir Kaur Sandhu. In 100m Breaststroke (Girls-III) Sukhmanjot Kaur topped the list followed by Pawani Bhatia and Riana Arora.

Former Minister of State Bharat Bhushan Ashu led the opening ceremony and declared the meet open. Teams from the participating districts marched on the deck and medals were distributed to the winners by the guest of honour Ashu.

During this two-day championship, Punjab swimming teams of boys and girls (sub-juniors) and juniors (boys and girls) will be selected for the 40th National Sub-Juniors and 50th Juniors Swimming Championships, to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from August 7 to 11 this year.
