US criticizes ICJ ruling that Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal – World

WASHINGTON: The United States has criticized the “broadness” of a ruling by the UN’s top court, in which the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal, a move Washington said would complicate efforts to resolve the conflict.

“We have made it clear that Israel’s program of government support for settlements is inconsistent with international law and also stands in the way of peace,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson said in an email on Saturday.

“However, we are concerned that the breadth of the court’s ruling will complicate efforts to resolve the conflict and establish an urgently needed just and lasting peace, with two states living side by side in peace and security,” the State Department said.
