Western Australian man charged with threatening staff at Perth airport

A Western Australian man is expected to appear in Perth District Court today (21 July 2024) accused of threatening airline and airport staff at Perth Airport overnight Friday night.

The AFP arrested 31-year-old Butler in the car park of Perth Airport after he allegedly jumped over a counter into a restricted area and threatened an airline employee.

When confronted by airport security, he allegedly threatened them with violence. He then left the terminal and drove into the parking lot, where he was arrested by AFP officers.

It is alleged that the man refused to provide his personal details to officers when police asked him to identify himself.

The AFP has charged the man with:

  • Two counts of making a threat to commit an act unlawfully, contrary to section 338B(1)(b)(iii) of the Criminal Code Act Compilation Act 1913 (WA). The maximum penalty for this offence is three years’ imprisonment;
  • One charge of disorderly behaviour in a public place or within the sight or hearing of any person in a public place, contrary to section 74A(2)(a) of the Criminal Code Act Compilation Act 1913 (WA). The maximum penalty for this offence is a fine of $6,000; and
  • Failure to comply with a request to provide personal information to the police, contrary to section 16(6) of the Criminal Investigation (Identifying People) Act 2002 (WA). The maximum penalty for this offence is 12 months imprisonment.

AFP Inspector Josh Gilmour said the AFP does not tolerate abusive behaviour towards airport staff.

“Staff at our airports in Australia are simply trying to do their jobs. Anyone who threatens them or behaves in a disorderly manner is dealt with swiftly by our officers,” said Acting Inspector Gilmour.

“The AFP works closely with the aviation industry to intervene when someone’s behaviour endangers the safety of the public at or around an airport.”
