Two years later: search for replacement rector of Diss continues

The search for a new rector for Diss is still in full swing, almost two years after the position first became vacant.

Parishioners have been waiting for news of an appointment since Reverend Tony Billett retired in September 2022.

Mr Billett was Rector of Diss for 21 years, a post with responsibility for 11 parishes including Winfarthing, Tivetshall and the Lophams.

Although his position has been advertised on the Diss Team Ministry website several times since his departure, it has still not been filled.

A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Norwich said: “It is not an unusual situation to have to advertise for a member of the clergy on a number of occasions. Nor is this a situation unique to this diocese.

“We are grateful for the ministry of Rev Canon Tony Billett. During the ongoing vacancy for a team rector, a team vicar has been in place during this time.

“There is also an assistant team priest, as well as licensed lay ministers and authorized worship assistants.”

The parsonage that is part of this function used to be a building in Mount Street, Diss, but that has been sold and the house needed complete renovation.

The diocese purchased a more modern six-bedroom property over a year ago, but it remains empty.

Further discussions will take place later this month as the diocese seeks a solution to the vacancy.

“A meeting has been scheduled with the parish church administrators to discuss and debate the way forward,” the diocese spokeswoman told the Diss-express.

The Diss Team Ministry operates on a system similar to a vicar model. This means that there is one central parish, St Mary’s Church in Mount Street, Diss. This parish acts as a hub for the other parishes.
