Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU), with over 10,000 members, has vehemently opposed the Bill, alleging it will lead to job losses and aggravate existing health problems among IT workers. KITU said the planned amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961 is an “open challenge” to the 2 million employees working in the IT/ITeS sector in the state.

Working Hours in IT Sector in Karnataka: The new proposal states that “an employee working in the IT/ITeS/BPO sector may be required or permitted to work more than 12 hours in a day and not more than 125 hours in any three consecutive months.”

Karnataka IT Working hours Amendment: While the Karnataka government is already facing criticism over ‘The Karnataka State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024’, the state government is considering extending the working day for employees working in the IT, ITeS and BPO sectors.

The proposed amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act suggests an extension of the working day for IT staff from 10 to 12 hours, sparking anger among unions in the IT sector. The unions have called the measure “inhumane” and an “attempt at slavery” and said the longer working hours would have a serious impact on the mental and physical health of workers, according to an ET report.
