MEA fully committed to ensuring safety of Indians in Bangladesh: EAM Jaishankar

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing violent student protests in Bangladesh, which have left several casualties, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has assured that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indians in the country.

EAM Jaishankar in a message on X has assured that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indians in Bangladesh. “Appreciate the concern of families and well-wishers of Indian nationals in Bangladesh. MEA is fully focused on ensuring their safety and well-being,” the message said.

On Saturday, the MEA said nearly 1,000 Indian students have returned to India from Bangladesh via various land ports or by air. “So far, 778 Indian students have returned to India via various land ports. In addition, around 200 students have returned home via scheduled flights via Dhaka and Chittagong airports,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Khulna are also assisting in the safe return of Indian nationals.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing violent protests over a controversial job quota system, which has led to a nationwide curfew. Clashes between protesters and police have resulted in scores of casualties. According to the MEA, more than 90 people have been killed in the protests, although the exact number of deaths has not yet been confirmed.
