Dutch pro-Palestinians smear Rotterdam city hall

According to Palestine Action and the municipality of Rotterdam, anti-Israel activists defaced Rotterdam’s city hall with red paint on Wednesday.

The front of the town hall was closed off, while the exterior facade was stripped of red paint.

Comments from the Deputy Mayor

The city did not know who committed the vandalism, but Deputy Mayor Robert Simons said in a statement Thursday that “police are doing everything they can to catch these perpetrators as quickly as possible.”

“I strongly condemn this hopeless anonymous action,” said Simons. “What do the perpetrators want to say with this?”

Activists sent a communiqué via Palestine Action Netherlands on Thursday, explaining that they had defaced the hall in protest against the civil servants’ pension fund Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP for alleged investments in companies that have financial ties to Israeli entities. Some of the companies are said to operate in Israeli settlements.

“This is the blood money of the Netherlands,” the activists say. “Invested for a good life here, at the expense of Palestinian lives there. This is what institutional complicity in Palestinian suffering looks like.”

Palestine Action Netherlands called for further activism against ABP, demanding that it divest from Israeli businesses and pay reparations for its “complicity.” The vandalism group called on government employees to call for divestment and urged its own supporters to pressure ABP by contacting the pension fund’s officials.

“If the demands are not met, the situation must be escalated,” the vandal group said.
