MU Fountain Added to National Register of Historic Places

HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — A monument that has stood tall at Marshall University for decades is now recognized as a historic site.

The National Park Service’s (NPR) National Register of Historic Places catalogs places of historical and archaeological significance throughout America. The Marshall University Memorial Fountain is the latest addition to the list.

Nominated for the register in June by the West Virginia Archives and History Commission, the fountain was built in 1972 by artist Harry Bertoia as a memorial to the 75 lives lost in the Marshall plane crash in 1970.

Huntington’s 14th Street West Historic District, which roughly covers Madison Avenue, Virginia Avenue, 15th Street West and 13th Street West, was also added to the registry list.
