New brewery planned for former Hopland site in Holland Township

HOLLAND TWP. — A new brewery is breaking ground with plans to open in the former Hopland Brewstillery building in Holland Township.

Leigh’s Brewing Company was brought before the city council on Thursday, July 18th to discuss an alcoholic beverage license. This license was eventually approved.

The application was for three new manufacturers’ licenses. It said the plan is to produce beer, wine and spirits on the premises and offer 46 seats at tables and a bar. The company suggested hours of operation from noon to 10 p.m., but did not specify which days it would be open. It will not serve food.

Jessica Ringling represented the Leighs at the meeting and said the idea to open the business came from her father, Lee, who was a frequent visitor to Hopland Brewstillery and fell in love with the community aspect.

“It’s something my dad has wanted to do for years, so we’re all coming together to make it happen,” Ringling said. “It’s kind of crazy. It’s all happened so fast. We’ve been talking about it for years and finally the opportunity came up. It’s still kind of unbelievable that it’s actually happening.”

Hopland Brewstillery first opened six years ago, but announced on social media in May that the business was for sale. It officially closed on June 15. The space was also once home to Big Lake Brewing, which has since relocated to downtown Holland.

Leigh’s Brewing Company becomes a family business that also involves Jessica and her sister Laurel, both of whom have Leigh as a middle name, along with their father and mother, Mary.

Although the family has hired someone to prepare the dishes, the idea is for everyone to be involved in the day-to-day running of the business.

“It’s really a dream,” Ringling said. “We’re just so excited. We all live separate lives and are all adults, so this is really an opportunity for us to get closer. We’ve all come together so much more in the last month or two.”

The business will be located at 977 Butternut Drive, Suite 4. Ringling said she hopes to open in September or October.

“Right now we’re kind of limited because we’re waiting on the state, liquor licenses and all the stuff behind it,” Ringling said. “We’re hoping for this fall.”
