Alarm bells for agricultural irrigation in Yenişehir

Gürhan ADANA / BURSA (IGFA) – In Yenişehir, where insufficient rainfall occurred in recent winter and spring months, temperatures above seasonal norms in the summer months are also negatively affecting agricultural activities. The drop in water levels in irrigation ponds in the district is a concern for farmers.

One of the irrigation ponds that cannot be fed with snow and rain water is the Akbıyık Irrigation Pond.

About 5 thousand decares of the village’s agricultural land is irrigated with water from this pond. Mukhtar Mehmet Çakır said that the water level in the pond has dropped to 20 percent, and said: “We can only irrigate the land for 1 month with the remaining water in the pond.”

Muhtar Çakır pointed out that farmers had to irrigate their farmlands 1 month in advance due to the lack of snow and rain last winter, saying: “The water level in our irrigation pond dropped to the level of August every year. “We still have 1 month of water left,” he said.

Muhtar Çakır indicated that silage maize and dried beans need water in August. If a small amount of water can be found in a few streams near the village next month, support can be provided there.
