Rural fire risk increases – The Portugal News

In a statement, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) also warns of a situation with relative humidity (HRA) below 30%, with a weak recovery at night and an increase in wind intensity from Wednesday, especially from the afternoon.

Given this scenario, ANEPC points out that the expected effects are an increase in the risk of fires, with favourable conditions for the occurrence and spread of fires in rural areas. It will also become more difficult to extinguish fires, especially in the northern and central interior and in the Algarve.

As a preventive measure, ANEPC reminds that “large-scale burning without authorization is prohibited” and that all matters related to this must be reported to the municipal council of the place concerned.

ANEPC also emphasizes the need to be extra careful when traveling and staying near forest areas, and be aware of the possibility of falling branches and trees due to stronger winds.

It also warns that on days with very high and maximum fire risk, it is prohibited to use fire to cook food in rural areas, unless this is done outside critical areas and in places officially authorized for this purpose.
