Denton County Public Health reported Monday that five mosquito traps in unconnected Denton County tested positive for West Nile virus.

Four of the traps were in northern Denton County, but one was in the northern half of Lantana. According to a press release from DCPH, residents in the affected area will be notified via emergency alerts and signs. All five areas will be sprayed three times from Tuesday through Monday, weather permitting. The ultra-low volume truck spraying will occur between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

DCPH recommends the following steps to minimize the risk of WNV infection:

  • Drain standing water in your yard and neighborhood to minimize mosquito breeding sites, such as birdbaths, flower pots, and clogged storm drains. Consider using BTI briquettes, often called mosquito dumps, in standing water that cannot be eliminated.
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants when outdoors and spray thin clothing with insect repellent.
  • Protect yourself by using EPA-registered repellents. Look for ingredients like DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

Detailed maps of fog areas can be found on DCPH’s West Nile Virus website at DentonCounty.gov/WNV, along with additional information including mosquito maps, the latest news, and WNV facts.
