Sunset Beach Port Waikato closed ‘until further notice’ due to coastal erosion

The sun has set on Sunset Beach in Port Waikato and the Waikato District Council has closed the beach car park until further notice.

The council announced the closure on social media on Tuesday after erosion overnight caused several metres of coastline to disappear.

“We are working closely with the local community to respond, with a rapidly deployable barrier to keep people safe in the car park. We thank them for their help,” the message said.

To prevent further erosion and reduce rainwater runoff, the council has indicated that 200 sandbags would be supplied for the car park as a temporary measure.
