Did you know that Prem Chopra was afraid to say yes to Bobby because it only had the iconic ‘Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra’ dialogue in it?

The fourth episode of The Invincibles season 2 is here and we see former villain Prem Chopra sitting on the couch. During a conversation with host and actor-filmmaker Arbaaz Khan, the ‘Bobby’ actor got candid about a lot of things from the bygone years. During the conversation, the actor opened up about Raj Kapoor’s 1973 film starring Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia and why he was scared to say yes to it.

Prem Chopra on working with Raj Kapoor in Bobby

Talking about working with Raj Kapoor in Bobby, Prem Chopra says, “Woh kamaal ho gaya tha. Bobby ke pehle jab Raj saab mij mujhe party mein (usne bola), ‘Mere agle picture mein tum kaam kar rahe ho’. Maine kaha, ‘Isse badi baat ky aho sakti, why not’. (It was great. Before I said yes to Bobby, Raj Kapoor met me at a party and said he wanted me in his next film. I said, ‘It’s a big deal. Why not.’)”

Prem Chopra added that the details of the role were kept under wraps for a long time, but he opened up about how his infamous dialogue ‘Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra’ came about. He said, “Toh mainpad ke dhekta hu (script) ki Chintu (Rishi Kapoor) and Dimple Kapadia ate hai aur main ladki ha vaderh pakad leta hu. Use a hello dialogue, ‘Prem. Prem name hai mera. Prem Chopra.” Main toh hairaan tha jab usne mujhe bola ki puri picture mein mera same dialogue as that. (When I read the script, I knew Rishi and Dimple would run and I had to capture Kapadia and introduce myself with the iconic dialogue. I was shocked to say that this was my only dialogue in the film.)”

Prem has reservations about saying yes to his iconic Bobby role

Talking about the reservations he had while saying yes to the iconic role, the veteran actor said, “Reservations thi. Main bataya ki aaj kaal joh main kaam kar raha hu Yash Chopra ya P Chopra saab ke saath toh woh mujhe barabar ke role de rahe hai aur yeh na ho ki kal woh bhu mujhe bole ki guest appearance kare.” He added that he was motivated to say yes to the film because he was told that the dialogues would make him famous if the film became a hit. “(I was hesitant to do the role as I had only 1 dialogue and was afraid that other filmmakers – who gave me heavy roles, would also choose to give me only 1-2 dialogues.)
