The love of ice cream may be one of the few things Americans can agree on — until you get to the flavors.

It’s National Ice Cream Month, but this summer every day might feel like ice cream day, especially with the recent heat wave in New England.

Holiday Calendar conducted a study to find the top five most popular ice cream flavors in each state, analyzing grocery data from over 12 million Americans. To supplement the findings, a survey was conducted among 4,500 people in 15 states.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor in Rhode Island

There may not be many moose in Rhode Island, but they certainly left their mark on the Ocean State’s ice cream shops. Rhode Island was one of two states that named Moose Tracks as their favorite flavor. The other was Michigan.

In fact, it only ranks in the top five out of six other states, two of which are in New England (Maine and New Hampshire).

Like four other New England neighbors, Rhode Islanders also enjoy their coffee taste, though not as much as Massachusetts, which places it in their top five. Their opinion seems to be about the same as Vermont, New Hampshire, Hawaii, and Alaska, which come in at number four.

Top flavors in the country

Vanilla came out on top in the national average, and was the top choice in 19 states. You can draw your own conclusions about what it might say that our nation’s favorite flavor is also synonymous with boring or uninteresting.

Chocolate was number one in 15 states and number two nationwide.

While no national list was available, the International Dairy Foods Association supported these findings with its own data released last week.
