NPF releases 694 million naira to relocate 347 police officers from dilapidated barracks in Lagos

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has released about N694 million to relocate 347 police officers and their families from dilapidated barracks in Falomo area of Lagos State.

The move is part of the police’s efforts to redevelop all police barracks across the country into more modern and more suitable accommodation for its personnel.

The Lagos State Government in May 2023 gave a 90-day ultimatum to the owners of 349 distressed buildings in the state to renovate or remove the buildings.

Following the state government’s decision, the police indicated that same year that they were prepared to renovate all barracks.

There has been outrage among some individuals who allege that their barracks in the state have been sold to powerful individuals.

Police responded to the allegation on Tuesday, saying claims about the sale of land at the Falomo barracks are misleading.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed that residents of Falomo Barracks Blocks A and B have each received the sum of N2 million as temporary relocation allowance, adding that the payment was made to 347 families after an approval process to facilitate their temporary relocation.

Adejobi stated that it was important for the NPF to address the shocking and unfounded trends in the discussions on the dilapidated status of barracks and their redevelopment, particularly the Falomo Barracks and other barracks in Lagos.

“While we understand the concerns and interests of affected groups and individuals regarding the general welfare of police personnel, we aim to provide clear and accurate information about these unpleasant allegations.

“Due to the critical condition of several police barracks (including Falomo Barracks), the NPF leadership has devised a partnership arrangement with sub-national governments and reputable developers to create value in the assets by redeveloping the barracks into more suitable and modern barracks – with additional facilities and modern infrastructure.

“The redevelopment of the barracks (including Falomo Barracks) is expected to be completed soon after which the residents will be provided with new housing as appropriate at the redeveloped sites. More specifically, the residents of Falomo Barracks Blocks A and B have each received the sum of two million naira (N2,000,000) as temporary relocation allowance. This payment was made to 347 families after a validation process to facilitate their temporary relocation.

“It is important to note that this initiative is not limited to Falomo Barracks alone. Similar redevelopment projects will be implemented in all police barracks across the country in due course. This is a strategic effort to improve the living conditions of our officers and their families, which is a major focus of the current police administration.

“The claims that the barracks are being vacated and the lands sold are false, mischievous and a calculated attempt to cause unnecessary discord within the ranks of the NPF. The improvement of these facilities is a priority for the Nigeria Police Force; and steps are being taken to effectively address the issues,” he added.
