Investigation launched after Stena Line employee dies at Cairnryan Port – The Irish News

An investigation has been launched after a Stena Line employee died at Cairnryan Port on Tuesday morning.

It happened around 7:15 a.m. Emergency services were called to the harbor after reports came in that the 60-year-old man had fallen into the water.

According to the ferry company, the man entered the water via the bank at Loch Ryan harbour.

He was pulled from the water but later died of his injuries.

“Stena Line can confirm that an incident occurred at approximately 07:15 this morning (23 July) where a port worker entered the water from the shore at Loch Ryan Harbour,” a spokesperson said.

“The man was pulled from the water and emergency services arrived on the scene. Scottish Police have now confirmed that our colleague has sadly passed away.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of our colleague. We stand with our employees during this difficult time.

“The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated by the authorities and Stena Line is fully cooperating with the investigation.”

Police Scotland said they were not treating the man’s death as suspicious.

“On Tuesday 23 July 2024 at approximately 7.30am we were called to reports of a man in the water at Belfast Way, Cairnryan,” a statement said.

“Emergency services arrived on the scene and a 60-year-old man was pulled from the water.

“He died a short time later. Investigations are ongoing but there are no suspicious circumstances. Health and Safety Executive will be informed in due course.”

The 3.30pm crossing from Belfast has been cancelled. The ferry company has said there may be delays to other services.
