This iconic city has just been named the best city in the world to live, work and visit

While all eyes are on Paris this summer, it’s London that steals the show. The British capital has just been named the best city in the world by international consultancy Resonance, which produces one of the most prestigious and comprehensive rankings of the 100 most popular urban areas to live, work and visit worldwide.

“London still reigns supreme among the world’s cities. Despite crippling COVID lockdowns and economic devastation. Despite Brexit. Despite a war in Europe. It is more indomitable and part of the global narrative than ever,” the company’s report said.

Resonance’s methodology examines data from more than 400 cities with populations of over one million and ranks each into three core categories: livability, amiability, and prosperity. These categories include multiple subcategories related to a city’s ability to “attract talent, visitors, and/or businesses.”

Two of London’s highest scores were in the subcategories of education attainment and culture, but the city also topped the overall categories of liveability and friendliness. After Dubai and Doha, London had the third-highest tourism spend in the world — a whopping $16.07 billion. With new underground stations added to The Tube, Resonance points out that the city’s public transport system has improved, which is great news for visitors.

However, London, like New York City, which tops the list of best cities in America, also faces challenges. The city’s banking district is currently struggling with a rising office vacancy rate of 17 percent.

Paris ranks second on Resonance’s list of the world’s best cities. The French capital scored perfectly for walkability and sights, but fared much worse in the affluence category, coming in at 14th, which tracks the poverty rate among its permanent residents. However, Paris remains the world’s most visited city, with 44 million travelers passing through it in 2022.

Resonance named New York City the third best place in the world to live, work and visit.

Tokyo and Singapore round out the top five, with the Japanese capital being singled out for its excellent shopping and dining scene. Dubai, which Resonance has dubbed the “Vegas of Arabia,” comes in sixth place, and San Francisco in seventh. The firm points out that the Golden City has suffered economically in recent years, as well as from a lack of affordable housing and rising crime rates. Barcelona, Amsterdam and Seoul are the final three cities in the top 10 best cities in the world.
