Elizabethton Receives TDEC Grant for Remediation Projects | WJHL

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has announced that the City of Elizabethton will receive funds from a Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grant for remediation projects.

Elizabethton’s grant was one of 36 grants awarded in Tennessee, totaling $718,757, to redevelop vacant or underutilized properties.

The City of Elizabethton was awarded $20,000 of the funds, which could be used to remediate old industrial facilities, former coal storage/scrapping yards, abandoned gas stations and closed landfills.

The Tennessee law provides direct funding to accelerate the cleanup and redevelopment of vacant land, helping local governments transform neglected properties into community assets, TDEC said in a news release.

“These grants address important issues with neglected properties in Tennessee,” Gov. Bill Lee said in a news release. “The process of cleaning up a contaminated property and turning it into an asset is an important step in environmental stewardship. We applaud the communities that went through the application process.”
