Dallas Mavericks 2024 Second-Round Pick Signs with French Club Team

The Dallas Mavericks had just one draft pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, trading up from No. 58 to No. 51 to select Melvin Ajinca of France. At the time, there was widespread speculation that Ajinca would be stationed overseas, with the Mavs prioritizing players who could help them now.

That speculation dissipated somewhat when Ajinca went to Las Vegas with Dallas to compete in Summer League, averaging 7.2 points per game on just 29.5% shooting.

After the problems in Las Vegas, the Mavs decided to sign Spencer Dinwiddie with their last available roster spot, allowing Melvin Ajinca to sign with ASVEL Basket, which plays in the top French Pro A League.

Ajinca has the build of a prototypical 3&D winger, but his shooting struggles in Summer League mean he needs more development. The Mavs could have signed him on a two-way deal, but they are holding onto his draft rights until they decide if he’s ever ready to come to the United States. Not many late second-round picks ever become significant contributors to the team they draft, especially foreign players.

The Dallas Mavericks currently have no open spots on the roster, but they could cut AJ Lawson to bring back a player like Markieff Morris.
