Lagos residents have no reason to protest; Sanwo-Olu govt ‘doing so much’ for them: SSG

Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG), says there is no reason for anyone to protest in the state.

Mrs Salu-Hundeyin said this on Tuesday in Ikeja during the meeting of the SSG with the Secretaries of Local Governments (SLGs).

She said there is no reason for protest given the lack of deliveries by the state government.

“Lagos State has done so much for its citizens that no one in the state should stand up and say they are going to destroy anything,” said Mrs Salu-Hundeyin.

“Sincerely, and I mean it; it is not because I am the Secretary to the State Government; I speak from my heart, and God knows there is no reason for anybody to cause protests, riots or violence in Lagos State.”

The SSG acknowledged that citizens have the right to protest, but warned that the demonstrations should not lead to violence.

“This is a state where before the Federal Government agreed to pay a minimum wage of N70,000, Lagos State was paying the same amount of N70,000.

“Lagos is the only state that does not owe pensioners a kobo; if you retire today, you start receiving your pension immediately. Lagos State Government is doing so much,” she said.

Mrs Salu-Hundeyin said the state government has done a lot for the economy including the Ilera Eko health insurance programme, construction of a medical college, improving transportation and engaging the youths.

She said the meeting with the SLGs was aimed at sharing and comparing notes and streamlining development from the state down to the community level.

“The secretaries are a little bit concerned; they are concerned; we have discussed the protest as parents, not that anyone wants to take out a stick to beat someone, but what can we do as parents if these are their grievances?

“Where is the government failing? We also need to look at ourselves as a government. If our people really say that this is something we are not happy with, then the government needs to look at this, and that is why we are here,” the SSG said.

The Chairman of Scribe 57, Mr. Akeem Dauda, said the planned protest was inappropriate and unnecessary in Lagos, based on the work of the state government.

Mr Daudu said the secretaries had decided to engage the youth in their local governments on this issue.

“We decided that we would go back home, talk to our children, talk to our brothers, so that they too could see it from a different angle, a different perspective,” he said.

The Chairman urged the youth to guard the country and not destroy it.
