Jewish activists arrested during Gaza war protest at US Congress building

TIME.CO, Washington – U.S. Capitol Police arrested Jewish activists protesting U.S. military support for Israel at a congressional building on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, a day before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to deliver a speech to Congress.

The protesters, organized by the activist group Jewish Voice for Peace, wore red T-shirts with the slogans “Not in our name” and “Jews say: Stop arming Israel.” Some carried banners reading “Ceasefire now” and “Let Gaza live.”

Protests are planned to coincide with Netanyahu’s visit, during which he will meet with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“Over the past 9 months, we have witnessed countless horrors in Gaza, committed in our name and funded by our government,” Jewish Voice for Peace wrote on social media.
More than 250 protesters were arrested and 400 protesters were present.

Police did not immediately provide arrest figures. A police statement said: “We told people who came in legally to stop or they would be arrested. They didn’t stop, so we arrested them.”
