Sandwich shop of royal proportions opens in Port Coquitlam

Earl of Sandwich, run by direct descendants of the real Earl of Sandwich, will open its first location in the Tri-Cities this fall.

A sandwich restaurant serving king-sized portions will soon expand its empire to Port Coquitlam.

Earl of Sandwich, which claims to make the “world’s best hot sandwich,” will open its first location in the Tri-Cities this fall — its second in Metro Vancouver and the third in all of British Columbia.

The American company made the announcement earlier this month via social media.

The official date and location of the festive opening are not yet known; at the time of publication it was July 23.

The Tri-City News has asked for confirmation and will update this story as more details become available.

The name Earl of Sandwich is fitting given the restaurant’s pedigree, beginning its 21st century legacy in one of the happiest places on earth.

In 2004, the restaurant opened its first location at Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs in Orlando, Florida. It now has more than 50 franchises worldwide, including in France, the Philippines and South Korea.

The signature sandwich, “The Montagu,” is in honor of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich®, who invented the eponymous meal during a card game in 1762.

The dish consists of roast beef and turkey with Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and Earl’s signature mustard sauce.

“Who better to carry on the tradition of the sandwich than the descendants of its inventor? In 2004, Lord John Montagu, 11th Earl of Sandwich® and his son, the Honourable Orlando Montagu, direct descendants of the inventor of the sandwich, partnered with Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood®, to launch the Earl of Sandwich® restaurants,” the company’s website states.

Other sandwiches include “The Original 1762” with roast beef, cheddar, and horseradish sauce; a meatball sandwich; ham and cheese; a vegetarian sandwich; a Cuban sandwich; and a full breakfast menu.

The Earl of Sandwich also has side dishes such as potatoes, soups, salads and kid-friendly options for the little eaters.

The other Metro Vancouver location, in Langley, opened in December of last year.
