Fiji Boxing National Coach Cam Todd is expecting over 100 boxers at the Western Extravaganza in Ba this weekend.

With most of the boxing matches held in Suva in recent months, Todd says hosting the sport in Ba will definitely increase interest among young people in the football-mad city.

The tournament, organised by the Fiji Sports Commission, will welcome novice boxers on the first day, while the second day will see the more experienced boxers take their turn.

According to Todd, the main reason for organizing such tournaments in rural areas is to attract more boxers, especially women.

“We’re trying to get boxing all over the island and not just in Suva, so we’re trying to build up the west a bit more. I did a coaching course there earlier this year and we had a tournament in Ba in June and that went well, so we’re doing another one. That’s the other reason we’re doing one in Navua next month as well, just to get it out of Suva and into the community so we can generate more interest.”

Todd adds that a similar tournament will be held in Navua next month as part of their national competition schedule.

The Western Extravaganza starts on Friday.
