East Prospect takes Game 1 of key series vs. York Township: Local roundup

East Prospect came out on top in a pitcher’s duel against York Township on Tuesday evening, earning a 3-1 home victory to open a three-game series between the Susquehanna League’s top two teams.

Dylan Stoops and Ethan Saxe both pitched complete games, but Stoops’ seven-inning gem lifted the host Pistons (23-7) to the win. He allowed one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts, while Saxe gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking two and fanning six for York Township (18-9).

All of the game’s runs came in the first three innings. East Prospect struck first on Ryky Smith’s RBI double in the first, York Township answered with Dean Davis’ RBI single in the top of the second and the Pistons reclaimed the lead on Bren Taylor’s single in the bottom of the frame. Mark Schauren added a double in the third that scored Dalton Renn.

Renn was the only player on either side with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Nicholas Hardesty was 1 for 2 with a double and a walk for the visitors.

The teams are scheduled to meet again at 6 pm Thursday and 10:30 am Saturday, with both matchups at York Township.

MORE SUSQUEHANNA LEAGUE

Conrads 4, Hallam 1: At Conrads, Steven Lehman allowed one run on two hits in five innings pitched to lead Conrads (16-13) to the home victory. Teammate Gavin Constein went 2 for 2 with an RBI; Bailey Grim went 2 for 3; Channing Bratton went 1 for 3 with two RBIs; and Cody Wise pitched two scoreless innings in relief to close the game out. Conrads took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second and never looked back. For the Express (15-14), Nathaniel Brown went 2 for 3 with a double at the plate.

Windsor 8, Felton 4: At Windsor, Nathan Hodgkinson went 2 for 2 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second and finished with three RBIs to lead the Cardinals (19-11) to the home victory. Teammate Zach Gettys added a three-run homer in the fourth; Conner Barto went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Chase Morris pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits to pick up the win. For the Mad Dogs (7-23), Luke Kordaz went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs; Collin Palmieri was 2 for 3 with two RBIs; and Jacob Bardo also went 2 for 3.

Jacobus 13, Stewartstown 0 (5 innings): At Jacobus, Brandon Shirk went 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and four RBIs to lead the Jackals (8-22) to the easy home victory. Teammate MJ Vottero threw a five-inning shutout on the mound, allowing one hit and five walks while striking out five in the win. Glenn Dietrich was 2 for 2 with three runs scored, while John Dyson went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. For the Vets (0-26), Brian Thomas connected for the lone single in the top of the second.

CENTRAL LEAGUE

Manchester 5, Vikings 4: At Manchester, Kyle Welch’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scoring Adam Kipp from third, capped off a three run rally and clinched the come from behind victory for the Indians (15-8-1). Teammates Spencer Rhoads went 2 for 4, including an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, and collected two RBIs for the game, Kade Kitts went 2 for 3 with a run scored, while Konnor Reeser went 2 for 4 at the plate. Reeser also started the game on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), six hits, three walks and five strikeouts to take a no-decision. Manchester relief pitcher Colin Mort threw a shutout inning, allowing no hits, no walks and striking out a batter to pick up the win. For the Vikings (2-21), Matt Knisley started the game on the mound, throwing five innings, allowing two runs (one earned), eight hits, two walks and five strikeouts to receive a no-decision, while teammate Trent Ketterman went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Mount Wolf 0, Stoverstown 0 (9 innings) (Tie): At Mount Wolf, neither team was able to cross a run over the plate through nine innings and the game was called due to darkness, giving each team a point in the standings. Mark Burnside pitched all nine innings for the Wolves (15-6-2), allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 10. For the Tigers (14-5-2), Joe Yourgal went the distance and gave up four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Mount Wolf’s Drew Hildebrand went 2 for 4 with a double, while Levi Krause had the lone hit for Stoverstown. These teams have now tied twice this season.

Mechanicsburg 1, Glen Rock 1 (tie, 9 innings): At Mechanicsburg, each team plated a run a piece in the third inning but neither side was able to score again and the game was called due to darkness. Conor Miller pitched all nine frames for Glen Rock (11-12-1), allowing a run on seven hits with two and eight strikeouts, while teammate Kevin Kopas went 2 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored. For the Cardinals (16-4-2), Phil Walby pitched seven innings and gave up a run on four hits while striking out eight and walking none. Ty Kaunas hit a solo homer, Shawn Karpaitis went 2 for 3 and Ty Sherman was 2 for 4.

Jefferson 9, Pleasureville 3 (6 innings): At Pleasureville, Amanjeet Turka pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits to lead the Titans (14-9-1) to the road victory. Jefferson led 3-2 through four innings before breaking the game open with six runs in the fifth. Teammates Aaron Becker and Tyler Yohn each went 2 for 3 with an RBI; Ross Drawbaugh was 2 for 3; and Kyle Konicek went 1 for 2 with two RBIs. For the Hawks (11-14), Trae Schanberger went 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI.

LEGION BASEBALL

Region 4 tournament championship game

Northeastern 6, Chambersburg 0: At Hershey, Quinn Shindler pitched a one-hit shutout to lead Northeastern (17-2) to the championship victory on the fifth and final day of the Pennsylvania Region 4 Legion tournament. Shindler allowed a first-inning single, walked two batters and struck out six. Northeastern plated four runs in the top of the fifth inning and added two insurance runs in the seventh. Brandon Charleston finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored; Conner Rippo went 1 for 3 with two RBIs; and Brinden Floyd was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Chambersburg (22-8) came back for a 5-4 win over Northeastern on Tuesday afternoon in a game that had been suspended Monday night; Northeastern led 2-0 in the second when play was stopped and had a 4-1 advantage before allowing four runs in the sixth. Because Northeastern had not previously lost, Chambersburg needed to add a 5-1 victory over Hummelstown to earn another shot in the winner-take-all game.

With the win, Northeastern now moves on to the eight-team state tournament at North Allegheny High School, which begins on Saturday. The team’s first opponent is yet to be determined.
