SPD approved to oversee development of 1,000-home plan

Buckinghamshire councillors have agreed guidelines for a 1,000-home development near Wendover.

The council’s cabinet approved a supplementary planning document at its meeting on 16 July to inform planning and development decisions for RAF Halton when the base ceases to be a military base in 2027.

The airport was identified as a location for growth in the Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan 2011-2031 (VALP), which was adopted in 2021.

Buckinghamshire County Council has worked with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (part of the Ministry of Defence) to develop the framework and principles for the development.

Peter Strachan, Buckinghamshire Council’s executive board member responsible for planning and regeneration, said: “The closure of RAF Halton presents an excellent opportunity for the development of a high quality residential area with associated infrastructure, services and amenities, including a new local centre, primary school and improved green spaces.

“With at least 1,000 homes on the site (of which at least 250 will be affordable homes) this will make a much needed contribution to meeting the housing needs of Buckinghamshire residents through the predominant redevelopment of brownfield sites, whilst protecting other areas of Buckinghamshire from development.

“Our detailed supplementary planning document outlines the expectations and requirements for this project, ensuring that the new neighborhood meets the wishes and needs of both new and existing residents.”
