Sewer and water projects cost more in Kenora

The City of Kenora must spend an additional $470,000 to implement two sewer and water projects.

One is located at 10th North and Mikado Avenue and the other is at the end of Park Street.

The extra money comes because the contractors encountered more stones than expected.

Mayor Andrew Poirier says the city faces unique circumstances that must be taken into account when drafting regulations at higher levels of government.

“That doesn’t cost you in Fort Frances…that doesn’t cost you in Thunder Bay…that doesn’t cost you in Kenora, Ontario, and maybe parts of Dryden and maybe Red Lake,” Poirier recently told Kenora city council.

“They need to hear that, because that is a significant amount for three blocks.”

Poirier adds that unfortunately, this is the cost of doing business in Kenora.

“That’s a classic example for our area, because they encountered more rocks than expected. But that’s a rule that the government has imposed on municipalities, and we follow it.”

In total, the budget for these two projects has decreased from $2.83 million to $3.3 million.
