Bridgewater and Raritan may share municipal court

BRIDGEWATER — The City Council has approved an agreement with neighboring Raritan Borough for a shared municipal court.

The Township Council voted to approve the agreement at its July 18 meeting. However, the Raritan Borough Council shelved the agreement at its July 16 meeting without discussion.

The agreement, which begins October 1 and runs through August 31, 2027, sees the city assume responsibilities for the Raritan Municipal Court.

Bridgewater has a similar agreement with Somerville.

Manville, Branchburg, Montgomery and Hillsborough have also joined together to form a joint municipal court in Hillsborough.

Katherine Howes, the borough’s municipal judge, serves the same function in Raritan Borough.

“This partnership with Raritan is an important step forward in our efforts to provide our residents with high-quality, efficient municipal services,” Mayor Matt Moench said in a statement. “We look forward to the benefits this shared services agreement will bring to both communities.”

Under the agreement, Bridgewater will serve as the principal agent and host for the court. Both courts will continue to operate as separate entities, retaining their own identities. The agreement will also allow the municipalities to optimize court facilities and staff.

Copies of the agreement are available for public inspection at the municipal clerk’s office.

The Raritan City Council must approve the agreement before the joint court can be finally established.
