Sufficient stock of fertilizers in Salem, says Collector

On Friday, the monthly meeting to address farmers’ complaints was held in Salem.

District Collector S. Brindha Devi said that the state government is taking various steps for the economic development of farmers. The farmers’ grievance redressal meetings are being held every month to cover all the farmers covered under the schemes announced by the government.

Officials have been directed to respond to farmers through post within 10 to 15 days about the action taken on the demands they raised in the meeting. The reason for the issues not addressed by officials will be examined in the next meeting, the Collector added.

Regarding availability of fertilizers in the district, Ms. Devi said that there is sufficient stock of fertilizers in all cooperative societies and private stores. A total of 25,304 metric tons of fertilizers are in stock, including 5,566 metric tons of urea, 1,212 metric tons of DAP, 1,552 metric tons of potash and 16,974 metric tons of complex.

Officials are instructed to conduct regular inspections to ensure that the fertilizers are sold to farmers at a fixed price.

Also, 172 tonnes of rice seeds, 24 tonnes of small grain seeds, 34 tonnes of pulse varieties and 47 tonnes of oilseeds are available for farmers in the district, the Collector added.

The annual normal rainfall in Salem district is 1,004.4 mm. In the current year, till July, 334.1 mm rainfall was recorded in the district. As at the end of June, 48,287 hectares of crops were under cultivation in the district, Ms. Devi added.
