A fire in the Wyoming Range is nearly under control.

As of last week, the Horse Creek Fire was 43 acres in size and only 10 percent contained. The fire was first detected in early July in a remote, rugged mountain area — about two miles northeast of the Blind Bull warming hut, a popular winter stop for snowmobilers.

A team of 64 firefighters and one helicopter were sent to battle the fire.

There was some concern as the fire risk in the area was ‘high’.

“That means fires can easily start from most sources, and small fuels like grasses and needles will ignite easily,” according to a news release from the Bridger Teton National Forest Service.

On July 25, the Forest Service reported that the fire was 90 percent contained.

“Favorable weather, with higher relative humidity and cooler temperatures over the past week, helped emergency responders safely reach the fire area and bring the fire under control,” Thursday’s press release said.

The remaining burning areas are still being monitored by a smaller team, and some nearby trails are still closed. Fire danger remains high for the area.
