Farmer Support: State govt support for farmers in low rainfall districts: Bhunia | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Bengal Water Resources Research and Development Minister Manas Bhunia has announced efforts to support farmers in south Bengal amid poor rainfall in some districts. The department aims to mitigate any adverse impact on crop yields by providing various forms of assistance. Bhunia said his department was trying to generate man-days for work pass holders through the Karmashree scheme as the Centre had blocked funds. Last financial year, MGNREGA workers contributed 4.8 lakh man-days, earning them Rs 15.9 crore in wages. This year, 6.4 lakh man-days have been generated so far, earning Rs 11 crore in wages. Bhunia highlighted the implementation of solar-powered small irrigation schemes, with 472 projects covering 5,618 hectares of land. Besides, 3.9 lakh ponds have been dug under the Jal Dharo Jal Bharo scheme. tnn
