Death toll rises to 209

Three more people died during treatment for injuries sustained during clashes that broke out around the quota reform movement in various districts including Dhaka. Two of them died on Thursday and Friday respectively at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Another person died at around 2am on Friday at the Mugda Medical College Hospital. They were identified as Imtiaz Ahmed, Md Mainuddin and Yeasin.

Besides them, two more persons from Noakhali are added to the list of deceased. Their deaths were not reported earlier. One of them has been identified as Mahmudul Hasan alias Rizvi, 20, of Char Kailash area under ward 1 of Hatiya Municipality in Noakhali. He lived in Uttara area of ​​the capital. Family members say he died on July 18 after being shot in the head.

The other person was identified as Ahsan Habib alias Tamim from Chatkhil area of ​​Noakhali. He was a first year student of the Department of Mathematics of Jagannath University.

This brought the death toll from fighting in the country over the quota reform to 209.

The death toll is based on sources from various hospitals and people who brought the bodies. However, this figure does not include information from all hospitals.

According to the information received so far, 6 people died on July 16, 42 on July 18, 85 on July 19, 38 on July 20, 21 on July 21, 5 on July 22, 3 on July 23, 3 on July 24, 5 on July 25 and 1 on July 26. Those who died between Monday and yesterday, Friday, were treated in different hospitals.

Imtiaz Ahmed breathed his last around 4:00 am on Friday while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). He sustained a bullet wound in the lower parts of his waist while he was having lunch in the city’s Banashree area on July 19.

Imtiaz was a third-year student of the BBA department of Southeast University in the Tejgaon area of ​​Dhaka. He hailed from the Deuli village of Jhikargachha in Jashore.

Meanwhile, another person succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Md Mainuddin. He died around 1:45 am on Friday. He was shot in the back and throat while returning home in Rayerbagh area of ​​Jatrabari. According to his family members, Mainuddin was a part-time teacher at a local madrassa. He got married a year ago.

Meanwhile, Yeasin’s autopsy was conducted at the DMCH mortuary. He was a resident of the capital’s Jatrabari area. He was shot in the abdomen during the clash in Shanir Akhra area on July 21. He was being treated at Mugda Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. Yeasin hailed from Khulna’s Rupsha upazila.
