Water level rises in Mumbai lakes, IMD issues ‘orange’ alert | Pragativadi

Mumbai: Parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, have been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past few days. However, Mumbai enjoyed a break from the rains on Friday after two days of continuous downpours.

The water level in Mumbai’s seven lakes crossed the 70% mark on Friday, a 5% increase from the previous day, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district for Saturday, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 30°C and 25°C respectively.

The Mumbai-based Regional Meteorological Centre posted on X: “Local forecast for Mumbai city and suburbs for next 24 hours: Moderate to heavy rainfall over city and suburbs. Occasional gusts of 40-50 km/hr are very likely. Maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 30°C and 25°C.”

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune and Satara districts in Maharashtra for Saturday, warning of likelihood of heavy to heavy rainfall. Chandrapur, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts have also been issued an orange alert.

Districts under orange alert may experience heavy to heavy rainfall at isolated places. The IMD has not issued an orange alert for any district in Maharashtra from July 28 to 30.

An orange warning code requires authorities to prepare for heavy rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours. A red warning code indicates the most critical situation, with more than 204.5 mm of rain expected in the same period.
