Giriraj Singh is currently serving as the 21st Minister of Textiles since 2024. A staunch supporter of Narendra Modi from the beginning, he publicly supported Modi for Prime Minister for a long time. He was born on September 8, 1952, in Barahiya town in Lakhisarai district of Bihar. He has been a prominent figure in Bihar politics and has served in various governmental roles.




Political career: Singh started his political career with the RSS in the early 1980s. The RSS shaped Singh’s political beliefs and ideologies. He served in the government of Bihar as Co-Operative Minister from 2005 to 2010 and as Animal Husbandry Minister from 2010 to 2013.

Giriraj Singh was one of eleven BJP ministers who Nitish Kumar dismissed following the breakup of the JDU-BJP alliance.


Ministerial Positions: He has held several ministerial positions under the Government of India and Bihar government.


State government:

From 2002 to 2014 he served as member of Bihar Legislative Council. He served as a Cooperative Minister from 2008 to 2010 and Minister of Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries from 2010 to 2013.


Centre government:

In 2014 he was elected as MP from Nawada Constituency of Bihar.

He won 2019 general election from Begusarai constituency by defeating CPI candidate Kanhaiya Kumar. After that Singh was made Union Cabinet Minister of Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. From the same Begusarai constituency he has won the 2024 general election.

During 2019 Modi’s cabinet reshuffling he was made Minister of Rural Development and Minister of Panchayati Raj replacing Narendra Singh Tomar.

Since June 2024 he is serving as Minister of Textile.

He is recognized for his outspoken support of agriculture, farmers’ welfare, and rural development issues. His controversial statements and adherence to Hindutva ideology have frequently made headlines.
