Energy Minister Says Squall Line Underscores Need for JPS to Conduct Full Assessment of Its Infrastructure

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz says the squall line that hit parts of the island last night has highlighted the need for the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to conduct a full audit and assessment of its infrastructure.

The squall line – a group of storms that form a line, often accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall – moved through eastern, central and western parishes.

In some areas, strong winds caused masts to fall and power outages to occur.

Minister Vaz, who is pushing for JPS to complete recovery work after Hurricane Beryl passed on July 3, says the impact of last night’s weather on JPS’s infrastructure shows the utility has not properly prepared for the hurricane season.

According to him, it is clear that the JPS is not maintaining its infrastructure.
