KMC Intensifies Campaign: Kolkata Municipal Corporation Intensifies Campaign Against Littering, Imposes Fines on Litter Fighters | Kolkata News

Kolkata: KMC has stepped up its campaign against littering in the city by imposing fines on waste thieves. According to a source from the KMC solid waste management department, the civic body has registered hundreds of complaints against individuals in residential areas and traders in market places in the past few months. Some of the worst wards where KMC has faced the problem include III, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XIII and XV. On an average, KMC collects fines from 30 households in a single ward every day. Some of the areas where the KMC has stepped up its campaign include Beliaghata, Narkeldanga, College Street, Sealdah, Kyd Street, Bhowanipore, Ballygunge Circular Road, Chetla, Tollygunge, Behala, Kidderpore and Jadavpur. According to a provision of KMC, the department can levy an on-the-spot fine of Rs 500 if anyone is caught littering on the streets. If the person refuses to pay the fine, a case is filed with the municipal magistrate court. The magistrate can impose a maximum fine of Rs 5,000. If the offender still refuses to pay, he/she can be sent to jail. The department has formed district-wise crack teams to carry out surprise raids in heavily littered areas. Each team comprises a supervisor and senior conservancy staff from the district. “We have started a special drive against littering. It will not only continue but will also intensify before we go all out to modernise the garbage collection service in the city,” said an official from the solid waste management department. As per the plans, the KMC is likely to introduce waste segregation for the entire city from the first week of December. “We have planned to introduce a waste segregation programme for households in 144 wards in a phased manner. However, our drive against littering will continue to ensure cleanliness,” said a KMC official.
