Canadian authorities report significant progress has been made in extinguishing the fires in the Jasper tourist area, with the remaining fires expected to be extinguished by the end of the day.

The fires, sparked by a massive wildfire in Alberta’s Jasper National Park, have already destroyed about a third of the town. Parks Canada has announced that firefighting efforts in Jasper are on track and some power is being restored to critical areas, speeding up further damage assessments and recovery efforts.

Despite the gains, the Jasper National Park wildfire remains classified as “out of control,” marking the largest blaze in the park in more than a century. Evacuations were ordered earlier in the week, and there are currently 157 wildfires burning in Alberta, though that number is down from Friday’s count. Cooler, rainy weather is aiding firefighting efforts, and officials are urging patience as the situation continues to improve.
