4 NE states get new governors, 2 senior BJP leaders from the region get governorships

CH Vijayashankar, former Lok Sabha member from Mysore in Karnataka, has been appointed Governor of Meghalaya.

In a major reshuffle of governorships, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed new governors for several states, including four northeastern states — Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Manipur.

Two top BJP leaders from the Northeast have been given governorship posts, while Rashtrapati Bhawan announced a reorganisation and new appointments of governors for several states.

Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the former Governor of Sikkim, has been appointed Governor of Assam with additional charge of Manipur.

Acharya replaces Gulab Chand Kataria, who has now been appointed as the administrator of the union territory of Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, Gulab Chand Kataria has replaced Banwarilal Purohit as Governor of Punjab.

It is worth mentioning that Anusuiya Uikye has been the Governor of Manipur since February 2023.

Veteran BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur has been appointed Governor of Sikkim and CH Vijayashankar, the former Lok Sabha member from Mysore in Karnataka, has been appointed Governor of Meghalaya.

Former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed Governor of Telangana, and former Assam MP Ramen Deka has been appointed Governor of Chhattisgarh.

The announcement, made by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday evening, marks a major change in the leadership of several states and union territories.

These appointments shall take effect on the date on which they take up their respective offices.
