Harris Narrows Gap With Trump in Presidential Race in WSJ Poll » Capital News

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Xinhua) — The U.S. presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is incredibly close, according to a new Wall Street Journal poll, which found that support for Harris among non-white voters is rising and enthusiasm for her campaign among Democrats has risen significantly.

In a head-to-head contest, Trump maintains a narrow lead, with 49 percent of the vote, compared to 47 percent for Harris.

It’s worth noting, however, that this is within the poll’s margin of error, which is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Previously, Trump had a six-point lead over President Joe Biden before dropping out of the race and endorsing Harris. When other independent and third-party candidates, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., were included in the polling, Harris received 45 percent of the support, compared to Trump’s 44 percent.

Kennedy had the support of only 4 percent of respondents, with 5 percent undecided. In the previous poll, Biden trailed Trump by six points in this multi-candidate scenario, as the poll results show.

Both the Harris and Trump campaigns are currently engaged in a race to create a clearer public image for the vice president. The poll shows that Harris is viewed positively by 46 percent of respondents and negatively by 52 percent, marking her most positive showing in the poll this election cycle. This marks her highest approval rating in the poll this election cycle.

According to the poll results, Trump is seen as more capable than Harris in dealing with immigration, the economy, foreign relations and crime. However, Harris holds an edge, 51 percent to 33 percent, when it comes to dealing with abortion. The two received similar ratings when it came to caring about people like respondents. The poll also revealed that 48 percent of respondents believe that Trump, at 78, is too old to serve as president, while only 2 percent expressed the same concern about the 59-year-old Harris. Additionally, 46 percent of respondents believed that Harris has the right temperament to be president, compared to only 38 percent who felt the same way about Trump.

The poll found that many voters are still familiarizing themselves with the potential vice presidential candidates Harris is considering. She is expected to announce her choice by Aug. 7 to meet a deadline her party has set for a virtual nomination process. The Wall Street Journal poll, conducted by Bocian of the GBAO firm and Lee of Fabrizio Lee, involved interviews with 1,000 registered voters from July 23 to 25. The margin of error for the entire sample is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
