Erik ten Hag urges fans not to book Mason Mount based on his debut season at United

Erik ten Hag has thrown his weight behind Mason Mount and has made a strong start to his second season at Manchester United after a tumultuous debut season.

It has been a year since the midfielder severed his 18-year ties with Chelsea to join the 20-time English champions, prompting many Stamford Bridge fans to revolt against him.

Yet such was the audacity that he made an instant splash with the United fans. Leaving the club you had been at since you were six to join a direct Premier League rival was undoubtedly a bold move by Mount and one that was respected by the supporters.

However, he was one of many Reds to fall victim to last season’s unprecedented and debilitating injury crisis, with the 25-year-old sidelined for the majority of his first season, limited to just 20 appearances in all competitions.

Mount, however, was able to end the term on a high. He made a brief cameo from the bench in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, and his two appearances in the competition saw him claim a winner’s medal as he lifted the trophy in front of thousands of travelling Reds at Wembley.

Don’t write off Mount before he even starts, says Ten Hag

As he looks to finally justify his £60million price tag in 2024-25, Ten Hag has urged fans to be patient with the midfielder and not base their opinion of him on the past 12 months.

“You can’t judge his season,” Ten Hag said about Mount’s 2023/2024 term. “Because he was wounded. Don’t judge him.”

“But if he is fit, he will be a very good player for us, and we can use him. Versatile… he will help us a lot.”
