Two dead in separate incidents

Jharkhand: Two people, including a woman, have been killed in elephant attacks in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district, a forest official said on Sunday.

A 70-year-old man was crushed to death by an elephant while he was in the forest near Chauthia village, Jharkhand, early on Sunday morning. The elephant suddenly attacked him, dragged him for a short distance and then killed him.

In another incident, an elderly woman named Baso Hansdah, a widow, was killed when a wall collapsed on her during an attack by a wild elephant in Dighi village late on Saturday night. She was sleeping when the elephant attacked her house, broke the wall and then fell on her.

Divisional Forest Officer (Dhalbhum) Saba Alam Ansari confirmed both incidents and said details were still being gathered. On receipt of the information, a forest department team rushed to the locations to investigate.

Protesting the attacks, angry villagers blocked the Chakulia-Matiyana main road on Sunday morning, demanding adequate compensation. Forest department and police officials reached the spot and assured the villagers that their demands would be addressed as per the provisions of the forest department, SDPO (Ghatsila) Ajit Kumar Kujjur said.

Both bodies have been sent for autopsy.
