Deputy mayor carried over muddy road

What’s the story

Surat Deputy Mayor Narendra Desai was carried along a muddy road by a fire brigade officer on Saturday as he inspected flood-hit areas in the city after heavy rains. India Today reported.

To prevent his pants and legs from getting dirty with mud and water, Desai asked the firefighter to lift him up.

Parts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat, including Surat, received heavy rainfall last week.

Incident receives attention on social media

Besides Surat, rural areas also received rain last week. The heavy downpour led to waterlogging on the Kadodara-Surat main road, with about two feet of water on the road.

Umargam received the most rainfall (20 cm), followed by Kamrej and Palsana (16.5 cm each), Surat city (16.5 cm), Neezar (16.5 cm) and Mahuva and Navsari in Surat (13 each cm).

Heavy rains cause flooding and rescue operations

Rising water levels due to persistent rainfall prompted authorities to advise residents of lower-lying areas to relocate to safer areas.

Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) and police were also deployed for rescue operations, underlining the seriousness of the situation.

A total of 20 teams of the SFES, consisting of 200 firefighters, were deployed. In addition, 18 boats were mobilized for the operations.

Monsoon rains in Gujarat claim 65 lives

Since June 15, heavy monsoon rains have claimed 65 lives and left thousands of people stranded in different parts of Gujarat.

Between July 24 and 25 alone, 12 fatalities were reported from rain-related incidents. The causes of these deaths included lightning strikes, drowning and collapsed houses.

As of Friday evening, a total of 14,552 people had been rehabilitated due to the ongoing crisis, a government official said on condition of anonymity.
