All cities and towns in Punjab region will now have to pay a new “garbage tax” as announced by the government. This decision was approved by the Standing Committee on Finance and Development of the Punjab Cabinet.

According to the notification, both rural and urban residents, as well as small and large businesses in the province, will be subject to the waste tax. The amount of the tax depends on the size of residential buildings and the volume of commercial activity.

In rural areas, a monthly garbage tax of Rs200 is levied on houses measuring 5 to 10 marlas, while larger properties between 10 marlas and 1 kanal are charged Rs400 per month. Small businesses and shops in rural areas are charged Rs300, while medium-sized enterprises pay Rs700. Larger businesses, factories and petrol stations are charged Rs700 per month.

The notice also states that residents of informal settlements (kachi abadis) will be subject to the new waste tax.

In Lahore, garbage tax rates are higher in urban areas compared to rural areas. The new monthly garbage tax rates for urban dwellings are as follows: dwellings up to 5 marlas (125 m²): Rs300; dwellings between 5 and 10 marlas (125-250 m²): Rs500; dwellings between 10 marlas and 1 kanal (250-500 m²): Rs2,000; and dwellings larger than 1 kanal (500 m²): Rs5,000.
