Prosper ISD wants to bring 8th high school to Celina

Members of the Celina Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the city rezone 46 acres at a meeting on July 18 so Prosper ISD can build its eighth high school.

The core

The land in question is a field on the edge of the Celina city limits along Frontier Parkway. It is owned by Prosper ISD and is currently divided between two uses:

Land zoned AG in Celina is limited to single-family homes and ranching, according to Celina’s city charter. The rezoning request would designate all 46 acres as a community facilities district, which would allow for public schools, according to a meeting presentation.

Typically, it’s the zoning of the land that determines what can be built. For example, apartment developments can only be built on land zoned for multifamily, says Dusty McAfee, director of development services at Celina.

However, he said, state law allows school districts to choose the land on which they want to build campuses in the future, regardless of its zoning.

What comes next?

According to a presentation at the meeting, PISD officials want the high school to open sometime in 2026.

Celina city council members are expected to make a final decision on the zoning plan at their next regular meeting in August.
