Weather alert: three updates for Monday

• Weather forecast for Monday:

There will be isolated showers in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Quite heavy showers of over 50 mm are likely in some places. There will be several showers in the North-Western province.

Strong winds of about 50-55 kmph may be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces and the districts of Trincomalee, Monaragala and Hambantota. Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph may be expected at times in other places on the island.

• Weather forecast for marine areas:

There will be occasional showers in the offshore sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. The wind will be westerly to southwesterly and the wind speed will be 30-40 km/hr. The wind speed may at times increase to 60 km/hr in the offshore sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. The wind speed may at times increase to 50 km/hr in the offshore sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

• Warning to fishing and marine communities:

Very strong winds of about 70-80 km/hr and very rough seas are likely over the Arabian Sea in the sea areas bounded by 10N – 20N and 55E – 67E due to active southwest monsoon conditions.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil may be rough or very rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu, and Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle may be quite rough at times. The naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard. (News item)
