Flights resume after power outage at Cape Town airport

Power outage halts operations at Cape Town airport

On Sunday evening, July 28, Cape Town International Airport experienced a major power outage, which left runway lighting, fire services and air traffic control out of order.

Flights were unable to land or depart and some flights were even diverted to other airports within the network as technicians rushed to restore power to the airport.

According to The citizenAirports Company SA (Acsa) has now confirmed that all operations at the airport have thankfully resumed after 01:00 this morning, July 29.

Thanks to the restored power supply, 11 aircraft were able to land.

“Acsa technicians and specialists are continuing with permanent repairs and the restoration of the network. However, we are waiting for a clear window of opportunity to carry out the required work,” Acsa said, according to The Citizen.

FlySafair flights diverted

Local airline FlySafair was one of the affected carriers, reporting on its website that several flights had to be diverted.

As reported by Cape Town ETCThe airline said flights to Cape Town were being diverted to their scheduled airports, while new flights were halted until the situation was resolved.

“FlySafair’s Operations team is working hard to minimise the impact of these delays. We are awaiting information from ACSA on when Cape Town International will be operational again. Once this is known, our teams will plan new departures and arrange landing and departure times from the airport,” the statement said.
