Flood Situation Improves, But Nagaon Remains Critically Affected

Assam is witnessing a gradual improvement in flood conditions, but Nagaon district continues to grapple with severe repercussions. As the floodwaters receded, the region remains in a critical state, with significant damage reported across several districts. The ongoing crisis underscores the need for continued relief efforts and support for the affected communities.

Current Impact and Affected Areas

Currently, approximately 44,434 individuals are still dealing with the aftermath of the floods, residing in 150 villages across 14 revenue circles. The impact has been particularly severe in Nagaon, while other affected areas include Golaghat, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, and Dibrugarh districts.

Agricultural Damage and Relief Efforts

The flood’s impact on agriculture remains alarming, with around 3,713.17 hectares of crop area destroyed in the past 24 hours. Relief camps are housing 1,562 individuals across four districts, offering temporary shelter and support. The situation for livestock is also concerning, with 6,343 animals affected in Sivasagar district.

Infrastructure Damage

The floods have affected significant damage on infrastructure, with reports of 12 road damage incidents—11 in Cachar and one in Sivasagar. Additionally, there have been eight instances of embankment breaches in Cachar district, exacerbating the situation.

Government and Relief Measures

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts to aid the affected communities. Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has highlighted the government’s commitment to flood-control measures, with the Union budget allocating Rs 11,000 crore for disaster management in Assam and Sikkim.

Scindia praised the infrastructure growth in the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, noting the region’s transformation from a neglected area to a key growth engine for India. The number of airports in the region has nearly doubled from 9 to 17, with significant investments made under the Purvoday Initiative. The budget for the Ministry of DoNER has increased from Rs 1,750 crore during the previous administration to Rs 6,000 crore, reflecting the government’s dedication to the region’s development.
