The government has approved construction of seven PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks with world-class infrastructure, including plug-and-play facilities, at greenfield and brownfield locations, including a greenfield project at Virudhanagar, Tamil Nadu. The parks will cost Rs. 4,445 crore and will be operational for seven years, till 2027-28.

Once completed, each park is expected to generate 1 lakh direct and 2 lakh indirect jobs. To implement the PM MITRA programme in Virudhnagar, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named “PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel Park, Tamil Nadu Limited” has been set up. The Government of Tamil Nadu owns 51 percent of the SPV, while the Government of India holds the remaining 49 percent.

Environmental clearance and zoning approval procedures from the Directorate of Urban and Rural Development have been completed. Water and power facilities are being provided up to the entrance of the park. Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) have been signed so far for a total amount of Rs 1,200 crore for park investment.

The ministry is implementing the Scheme for Integrated Textile Park (SITP) to provide support for the establishment of textile parks with top-notch, state-of-the-art infrastructure in textile hubs across the country. The aim of this initiative is to increase investments, generate employment and boost exports in the textile sector. The scheme was in effect till March 31, 2021. However, the scheme has now been merged with the Textile Cluster Development Scheme (TCDS) and an amount of Rs. 568.15 crore has been set aside exclusively for completion of ongoing projects. The parks have been approved for Tirupur, Namakkal, Karur, Madurai, Kanchipuram and two in Erode. This information was given by the Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
